Non functioning streetlights in Apo D3 raises safety, security concerns as residents plead with FCT minister for intervention

Apo D3 Neighbourhood Association, Abuja, has drawn the attention of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nysom Wike, to the blackout currently experienced by the residents of the community arising from the removal of grid-powered streetlights which are yet to be replaced with solar infrastructure.

According to the association, the non replacement of the streetlights which has lingered for months now is raising safety and security concerns in the area.

In a letter dated November 3, 2025, and addressed to the minister, the residents pleaded for urgent restoration of the streetlights to avoid criminals taking advantage of the situation.

Although, the residents raised the issue since November last year, till date nothing has been done about it.

The letter, titled: “Request For Urgent Intervention on Non-fictional Streetlights On Jereton Mariere Mobolaji Johnson/David Jemibewon Crescent Up To Oladipo Diya Street Junction Apo Zone D Following Ongoing Solar Conversion,” reads in part: “We write on behalf of the above referenced residents to respectfully draw your attention to the security and safety concerns arising from the current blackout in our community due to the ongoing replacement of grid-powered streethghts with solar Streetlighting infrastrecture.

“Apo D3 has for years benefitted from functional grid-supplied streetlights which supported safe movement, reduced security cancerns, and enhanced the general wellbeing of residents. However, since the commencement of the conversion preject, the existing functioning lights were taken off and solar street lights are yet te be installed.

“Several weeks have now passed since the streetlight was removed, yet the lighting units have not been mounted, leaving the entire neighbourhood in darkness at night.

“This has resulted in increased anxaiety among residents, pedestrians, motorists, and local businesses due to reduced visibility and greater vulnerability.

To the residents, the present situation poses even greater concem fer households and families within Apo D3.

They therefore pleaded with the minister for speedy completion and activation of the solar streetlight installation in the area or a temporary reinstaternent of lighting, pending full implementation.

“We sincerely acknowledge and commend the administration’s commitment to Infrastructure modernization, sustainability, and public safety across the Federal Capital Territory. We are confident that prompt intervention in this matter will further strengthen residents’ trust and contribute to a safer environment for all,” the letter added.
