Suspected thugs attack ADC secretariat in Edo
Suspected political thugs on Wednesday night attacked the Edo State secretariat of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), in an attempt to set it ablaze.
It was gathered that the thugs shattered windows and other items in the building located on the Ogbelaka street, Benin City, when they couldn’t set it ablaze following resistance from the residents of the area.
A viral video of the attack on social media, a man narrating the incident alleges that the attackers attempted to burn down the facility before fleeing the scene.
The State chairman of the ADC, Kennedy Odion, confirmed the incident, saying the suspected thugs intention was to set the building ablaze.
“They destroyed all the windows and other thing in the building before ADC sympathizers in the area came to the rescue.”
He alleged that their intention was to set the secretariat ablaze because they came with 10 liter of fuel to the building.
According to him, some politicians want ADC to leave the State for them, so that no other political party would contest the 2027 election with them in the state.
“Election is a game that requires everybody’s participation, and there is freedom of association and it is still in force and you can’t force anyone to join a political party of your choice” he said.
He said the has reported the matter to the security agencies, urging them to fish out the perpetrators and brought them to book.
The State Command’s spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the attack, saying a reported of suspected hoodlums attacking the party’s secretariat and were destroying properties was report to the Police at about 8pm, on Wednesday.
She said Police operatives immediately mobilised to the scene to restore normalcy, adding that
preliminary assessment revealed malicious damage to flags and two shattered windows in the premises.
According to her, security has been deployed to the area to forestall further attacks, while investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible.
