10 killed, 35 injured in ‘terrorist attack’ in New Orleans attack

No fewer than 10 persons have been killed and 35 others injured as a truck rammed into New Year’s Eve revellers in the city of New Orleans, Louisiana, United States.

The city’s mayor, LaToya Cantrell described the incident as a “terrorist attack”.

The city said the incident occurred at 3:15 am local time at the popular Bourbon Street, where revellers gathered to watch the city’s New Year’s Eve fireworks.

The male driver rammed his pickup truck into revellers before exiting the vehicle and shooting at the police, injuring two cops.

New Orleans Police Chief Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said “this man was trying to run over as many people as he possibly could”, having driven through barricades and stormed down the streets at a “very fast pace”.

The police said the driver was shot dead in the ensuing gun fire.

Witnesses said the driver was wearing full body armour.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said it is investigating the incident as a possible terror attack.
