10-year-old policeman’s son accidentally kills father with service rifle

The family of a police officer, Inspector Okolie Amechi, has been thrown into mourning following his death from shots by his 10-year-old son, who accidentally pulled the trigger of his assigned AK-47 rifle.

The shots from the rifle were said to have killed the Inspector instantly while his other brother was injured in the process.

Police source said the tragic incident occurred in the evening of Sunday, June 15, 2025, in Awka, Anambra State, South-East Nigeria.

A statement by the Anambra Police Command’s Spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the unfortunate incident.

The PRO said the boy accidentally pulled the trigger of the rifle, killing his father and injuring his sibling in the process.

“The son unaware of the state of the AK-47 rifle assigned to the Inspector, pulled the trigger and struck the Inspector on the back and his second child on the hand.

“Regrettably, Inspector Amechi was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty at the hospital, while the second victim was said to be responding to treatment,” the statement said.

It added that the AK-47 rifle has been recovered while the remains of the deceased have been deposited in the morgue.
