Army reacts to death of officer set ablaze by wife in Akwa Ibom

The Nigerian Army has condemned the killing of Lt Samson Huruna, who was reportedly set ablaze by his wife at Wellington Bassey Barracks, Ibagwa, Abak Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

The army described the death as a tragic case of domestic violence and extended condolences to the bereaved family.

They couple reportedly wedded five months ago.

Reliable sources confirmed that the tragic incident occurred on 22 September 2025 following a heated argument between the officer, who was also a medical doctor serving as the Regimental Medical Officer (RMO) of 6 Battalion, and his wife, Mrs. Samson Haruna.

According to reports, the altercation escalated, leading to the suspect allegedly dousing her husband with petrol (PMS) before setting him ablaze.

The officer sustained severe burns and was immediately stabilised at the Military Reference Section (MRS) within the barracks before being evacuated to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital for advanced medical treatment. Despite intensive efforts by medical personnel, Lieutenant Haruna succumbed to his injuries.

Security sources disclosed that the suspect has been arrested and is currently in custody, while the Nigerian Army and relevant authorities have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The late officer was described by colleagues as a dedicated and disciplined medical practitioner who served with professionalism until his untimely death.

Reacting to the incident, the Nigerian Army, through the Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Major Lawal Muhammed, described the act as a tragic case of domestic violence and extended condoled with the bereaved family.

“The Nigerian Army strongly condemns this act of domestic violence, recognising the imperative of peaceful coexistence and respect within families,” the statement read.

Muhammed said preliminary investigations revealed that the fatal incident followed a heated argument between the couple.

“The Nigerian Army will continue to advocate healthy relations, address domestic violence, and foster a culture of respect and dialogue within families and communities,” he added
