Charly Boy dismisses coalition, describes it as “old wolves in new agbada”

Nigerian music icon, Charles Chukwuemeka Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has described the new coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as “old wolves in new agbada.”

Weighing in through a post on his official Facebook page on Thursday night, he dismissed the coalition members as the same people who have failed Nigeria in the past. He accused them of seeking power for selfish reasons rather than genuine national interest.

Popularly called Area Father, Charly Boy lambasted members of the coalition aiming to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election, dismissing them as unserious.

The coalition includes major opposition leaders from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), and some discontented members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

While the coalition’s announcement sparked excitement across Nigeria, many have expressed doubts about the true intentions of these political figures. Notably, activist Omoyele Sowore also distanced himself from the movement, calling the leaders corrupt.

“Coalitions are forming, but let’s not pretend that every alliance is progress. Sometimes, it’s just old wolves in new agbada,” Charly Boy wrote. “Are they fighting for you, or fighting to sit where their enemies used to sit? Are they shouting ‘enough is enough’ because they’ve changed…or because they’re no longer the ones benefitting?”

Charly Boy urged Nigerians to demand new values, fresh visions, and leaders with the courage to live by them, emphasising that the 2027 election should be about rescuing Nigeria, not revenge.

The opposition coalition led by the likes of Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, Nasir El-rufai, Sule Lamido, Rauf Aregbesola, among others, remains determined to challenge President Tinubu, but the voices of critics like Charly Boy highlight the skepticism many Nigerians hold about the new political alliance.
