Ghana President confesses: My stepmother is Nigerian from Offa, Kwara, she raised me

Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, shared his deep connection to Nigeria, revealing a personal history that ties him closely to the country.

In a recent interview reported by Premium Times, Mahama disclosed that his stepmother hails from Offa, in Kwara State, a place he considers his hometown in Nigeria.

President Mahama’s link to Nigeria stems from his childhood, during which his father was exiled to Nigeria following a military coup in Ghana. During this period, Mahama lived with his Nigerian stepmother in Offa for several years, forming a close bond with the community.

Highlighting his ties to the region, Mahama shared that he was honored with a chieftain title by the Oloffa of Offa, making him the Aare Atolase of the Offa Kingdom. This recognition reflects the enduring cultural ties between Ghana and Nigeria and underscores Mahama’s personal connection to the Nigerian community.

Speaking about his background, Mahama stated, “My stepmother is Nigerian, and she raised me. She is from Offa in Kwara State.” Reflecting on his time in Offa, he added, “When there was a coup in Ghana, my father lived in exile in Nigeria, and I stayed with my stepmother for many years in Offa. I know Offa very well.”
