Governor Zulum approves N250,000 for fathers, N50,000 for mothers of 90 students

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has approved a special education support package for students and parents in Magumeri Local Government Area, northern Borno, where school enrollment has remained critically low due to years of insurgency.

Speaking on Friday at the inauguration of the Higher Islamic College in Gajiganna, Governor Zulum lamented that in a town of about 50,000 people, only 90 students were enrolled in secondary school.

He stressed the need for deliberate intervention to reverse the trend and strengthen education in the region.

To encourage parents and ensure continuity in their children’s education, the governor announced stipends of N250,000 for the fathers and N50,000 for the mothers of each of the 90 students.

In addition, he approved N50,000 in financial assistance for every student to meet essential needs.

“We will approve stipends of N250,000 for their fathers and N50,000 for each of their mothers,” Zulum stated, adding that this would help sustain enrollment and ease the burden on families.

The governor also directed that one free meal per day be provided for all the students and awarded full scholarships to nine girls who performed enrollment songs during the event.

Zulum explained that his administration had already established similar colleges across the state to provide both literacy and vocational education to Almajiri pupils, stressing that education in northern Borno must be prioritized.

He urged the chairmen of primary and secondary education boards to pay closer attention to the region, which, he said, remains the least developed educationally in the state.

“Our primary objective is to equip these children with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in today’s world,” the governor emphasised.
