Just in: Terrorists launch deadly attack on secondary school in Kebbi, kidnap students, murder staff -Police speak
Reports just coming from Kebbi state have it that some terrorists have launched a deadly attack on Maga Comprehensive Girls’ Secondary School, around 5:52 a.m., Monday, abducting several students.
According to Humangle, the attack resulted in the death of one staff member, while a guard was injured.
The report added that residents say the attackers are still around and are calling on the security operatives to rescue the abducted girls.
“We know they are still around the area. Government must move fast if these children are to be rescued,” a resident told HumAngle
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies have yet to release a statement on the attack.
In recent years, Kebbi State has been noted as one of the hotspots in school abductions, reflecting the broader wave of insecurity sweeping across Nigeria’s northwestern region. The most notable incident occurred on June 17, 2021, when armed attackers invaded the Federal Government College, Birnin Yauri.
During the assault, the gunmen killed a police officer and abducted at least 80 students and five teachers, marking one of the most significant school kidnapping cases in the state’s history.
However, according to a statement released on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Nafiu Abubakar Kotarkoshi, the armed men invaded the school around 4:00am, shooting sporadically as they forced entry into the premises. He said police operatives quickly engaged the attackers in a gun duel but the assailants were able to scale the school fence and escape with the students.
“One staff member, identified as Hassan Makuku, was shot dead while another, Ali Shehu, sustained gunshot injuries to his right hand,” Abubakar confirmed.
He added that additional tactical units, military personnel and local vigilante groups had been deployed to pursue the attackers and rescue the abducted students. Search operations are currently ongoing across suspected bandit routes and surrounding forest areas.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Bello M. Sani, assured residents of intensified security measures, urging the public to remain calm, vigilant and supportive of law enforcement efforts.
Meanwhile, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ahmed Idris, also confirmed the incident, stating that the exact number of abducted students was still being verified. He noted that the Deputy Governor, Senator Umar Tafida, had been directed to visit the school for an on-the-spot assessment.
Anxious parents and residents of Maga continue to await updates as rescue operations progress.
