Kano closes tomato market over prostitution, adultery

The Garun Mallam Local Government Area in Kano State has shut down the Kwanar Gafan Tomato Market due to allegations that it had become a center for prostitution, adultery, homosexuality, and other immoral activities. This action aims to restore order and integrity in the area.

According to report by Vanguard, local authorities indicated that the reported misconduct, involving both youths and married women, led to the market’s closure.

Council Chairman Aminu Kadawa confirmed that all vendors were given a seven-day notice to vacate the premises or face legal action. He stated, “Given how the market has turned into a hub for prostitution and other immoral activities, it has to be closed indefinitely to restore order.”

Kadawa also mentioned that a date for the market’s potential reopening would be announced once the situation is resolved.

The decision has garnered support from Aisha Saji, the Commissioner of Tourism and Management. She recalled her previous role as Commissioner for Women Affairs, where she led a raid at the market that resulted in the arrest of 43 individuals—34 females and nine males aged 15 to 18—for prostitution and the illegal sale of alcohol. Alarmingly, 14 of those arrested were found to be HIV-positive, with 10 aware of their status.

Saji noted that the individuals involved came from various states, including Adamawa, Anambra, Bauchi, Benue, and Taraba.

She also reiterated her earlier recommendation to demolish the market and replace it with a skills acquisition centre to combat unemployment in the area. “This closure should not only end immoral activities but also pave the way for development. Establishing a skills development center will not only reduce unemployment but also provide our youth with sustainable livelihoods,” she asserted.
