Lawmakers demand public apology over hearing conduct

A senior legislator has called for a formal apology from Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili, Nigeria’s former Minister of Education, following what he described as “inappropriate conduct” during a recent Senate committee investigation.

Speaking to Channels Television, Sen. Onyekachi Nwaebonyi expressed strong disapproval of Dr. Ezekwesili’s deportment during the proceedings, where she declined to take the customary oath before providing testimony.

“A formal apology is warranted – not solely to the Senate President, but to the entire legislative body and the Nigerian populace,” Sen. Nwaebonyi declared. “It is unprecedented for an individual to appear before a committee, reject the sworn oath procedure, and subsequently launch unsubstantiated allegations.”

The contentious episode unfolded during an investigative hearing addressing a formal petition. The situation escalated when Dr Ezekwesili’s refusal to participate in the oath-taking ceremony resulted in a confrontational exchange with committee members, particularly Sen. Nwaebonyi, who publicly questioned her motives.

“The reluctance to take an oath while maintaining certain assertions naturally raises concerns about authenticity,” the senator remarked during the interview.

Sen. Nwaebonyi further suggested that the former minister’s actions appeared calculated to obstruct the investigative process. “Her presence seemed designed to create disorder and damage reputations, but the public is astute enough to discern reality,” he maintained.
