N100m was mistakenly paid into Egbetokun son’s account, it was promptly reversed, police clarify

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) have said that there was no underhand dealing in the N100 million paid into the account of son of former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun.
The police said it was an administrative banking error and was promptly reversed when it was discovered.
The Police emphasised that no wrongdoing or illicit payment occurred.
The clarification follows an online report alleging that the money originated from the Anambra State Government’s security vote account, prompting public concern and calls for investigation.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme, Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, explained that Victor himself reported the unexpected credit. He immediately instructed his accounts officer to reverse the funds, which was done without delay.
“He printed out his bank statement and showed me. The young man was forced to close that account. He has also written a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for investigation,” Hundeyin said, highlighting the proactive steps taken to ensure transparency.
The police stressed that neither the IGP nor his son had any involvement in authorising or benefiting from the transaction. The funds were quickly returned to the state government’s account, confirming that the matter was a mistaken transfer, not a case of corruption or misappropriation.
This incident has intensified discussions about security vote management and the importance of strict financial controls within public institutions. The police reiterated their commitment to accountability, transparency, and proper auditing procedures to prevent such errors in the future.
