NAFDAC seizes 1,600 bags of fake rice worth N5bn in Nasarawa

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered a large counterfeit rice operation in Nasarawa State.

The agency said it seized 1,600 bags of fake rice valued at N5 billion. Eight shops and a warehouse in Karu Local Government Area of the state, where the production and distribution of counterfeit rice were taking place, were shut down.

Vanguard reported that NAFDAC extended its investigation to markets in Wuse and Garki, Abuja, under the directive of its Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye.

During the operation, officials found fake rice repackaged in branded bags, including popular names like Big Bull, Royal Stallion, and Tomato Aposo, aimed at deceiving consumers. Empty bags bearing these brand names were also discovered at the Karu facility, further exposing the scale of the operation.

NAFDAC’s actions highlight ongoing efforts to safeguard public health and prevent the circulation of counterfeit products during the festive season.
