Obaseki draws battle line with Edo Gov, Okpebholo, threatens to fight back (Video)

Former Edo State governor Godwin Obaseki has publicly addressed what he described as persistent provocations from the current administration under Governor Monday Okpebholo, saying he has been pushed to a point where he will no longer remain silent.

Speaking at an event, he explained that he had deliberately avoided commenting on the state’s political affairs for a full year after leaving office, hoping to give his successor, Okpebholo, space to govern.

Obaseki said his remarks during an earlier engagement in Bermuda had triggered reactions, but insisted that what he said was only the beginning. He repeated the line, “those who live by the sword, die by the sword,” adding that anyone who starts with violence should expect the same in return. According to him, he has never met the governor he was referring to, but has watched events involving Okpebholo unfold from a distance.

He stated that from November 12, when he left office, until the same period one year later, he did not issue a single public comment about the government. He said this changed only after a pattern of harassment began, starting with incidents involving diplomats who came to view exhibitions. Obaseki alleged that individuals were sent to disrupt events, insult him and issue threats, and claimed that these actions involved both the government and traditional authorities aligned with Okpebholo.

The former governor went further, accusing the government of sponsoring people to attack him during a visit to Manchester, adding that the situation left him questioning who truly initiated the violence. He described a recent press conference by the governor as disgraceful and said it included personal threats aimed at him.

Obaseki also took issue with comments about his background, saying he found it insulting to be told he could not speak to certain groups of people. He stressed that he is not afraid of confrontation and warned that the constant threats directed at him have crossed a line.

He argued that he cannot stand by quietly while, in his words, “deranged people” attempt to intimidate or harm him. Obaseki said he will not leave himself exposed and made it clear that he intends to defend himself. “I’m going to fight back,” he said, adding that this was a public notice of his intention.

He dismissed claims that he was behind attempts to disturb the event where he was speaking, calling those responsible “junkies” who act out of fear. According to him, their behaviour is driven by the knowledge that they did not win the election. He concluded by referencing what he witnessed in Anecdote, describing the conduct there as shameful.
