Peter Obi promises monthly stipend of N5,000 for each IDPs family in Abuja

The Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has urged Nigerians to cultivate genuine empathy for one another, especially during challenging times. Obi made the statement during a New Year’s Day visit to an Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in Abuja, where he spent time with victims of banditry and other conflicts.

In a gesture of goodwill, Obi announced financial support for the displaced families in the camp. “I’m going to give each family N5,000,” he declared to the applauses from the crowd, adding, “I will come back more prepared.”

Speaking to the gathered residents and officials, the former governor of Anambra State emphasised the importance of compassion and collective responsibility.

“I thank the national commissioner. I mentioned this to them. I thank them for what they’re doing, but we urge them to do more,” Obi said, acknowledging the efforts of those managing the IDPs camp.

He pledged continued personal support, saying, “In my own way, I will give them whatever I have and continue to do so from time to time. For the clinic, I will create a way to provide a monthly stipend to encourage those working for free.”

Obi stressed the need to prioritize the welfare of displaced persons over political distractions, stating, “For me, what is important now is looking after them. The purpose of coming here is their care. Next election, when it comes, we will take it from there.”

The Labour Party candidate also called for a cultural shift in how Nigerians relate to one another, saying, “We need to be more caring. I wish the country all the best. Nigeria is a country of plenty, yet a country of scarcity for so many. Can we be more loving, more caring about each other?”

Peter Obi’s visit highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by displaced Nigerians and underscored his commitment to advocating for better living conditions and a more compassionate society.
