Peter Obi shares moment of joy, sorry following Super Eagle’s Unity Cup win, death of Kano contingent

The joy that filled Brentford Community Stadium during the Unity Cup match between Nigeria and Jamaica quickly turned into deep sorrow, as shared by Peter Obi in a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter).

The match, which ended 2-2 and was settled by penalties in favour of the Super Eagles, was meant to be a celebration of unity, culture, and the resilient Nigerian spirit. Peter Obi, who had just wrapped up engagements at the London Business School, was in attendance and described the experience as an uplifting reminder of Nigeria’s shared hopes and strength.

But the former Anambra State governor revealed that the celebration was shortlived just moments later when the news of the death of over 20 members of Kano contingent to the the Gateway Games which held in Abeokuta, Ogun State, h.it the airwaves.

“Our joy was cut short,” Obi wrote on X, referring to the devastating news he received shortly after the match at the train station.

According to his post, 22 members of the Kano State sports delegation, who were returning from the National Sports Festival held in Ogun State, were confirmed dead following a horrific road accident.

Obi described the game not just as a football match but a moving celebration that brought Nigerians together in joy. However, the tragic incident reminded everyone of the fragility of life and the dangers faced by many on Nigerian roads.

He used the moment to commend the organisers of the Unity Cup for reviving a meaningful event that showcases young talents and unites people across divides. Yet, he emphasised that no amount of joy could erase the pain of such a heartbreaking loss.

“Let us spare a moment to reflect on the lives lost and the families who now mourn,” Obi said in his statement. He extended condolences to the affected families, the National Sports Commission, and the Kano State Government.
