Reasons APC National Chairman Umar Ganduje resigned

It has become clearer reasons for the surprise resignation of Abdullahi Umar Ganduje as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The national chairman’s exit is reportedly part of a strategic move by the ruling party to calm rising agitations among stakeholders from the North-Central zone, who have consistently demanded the return of the party’s top office to the zone.

Though Ganduje, a former Governor of Kano State, cited health reasons for his decision, sources familiar with the matter suggest that political tension within the party may have also played a role in his decision to step down.

Allegations of financial impropriety have also been linked to his resignation, with some party members reportedly protesting “excessive financial demands” imposed by his office.

Specifically, aspiring FCT area council candidates had complained about hefty fee requirements for receiving the party’s ticket .

Ganduje’s resignation marks a significant shift in the APC’s leadership, and stakeholders are eagerly awaiting further clarification on the circumstances surrounding his departure.

A source within the party said Ganduje would be succeeded in acting capacity by one of the party’s national vice chairmen until a substantive chairman is elected at the APC national convention scheduled for December 2025.

Ganduje was appointed Chairman of APC in August 2023 following the resignation of former national chairman Abdullahi Adamu from the North Central zone. His tenure has since faced increasing resistance from within, particularly from those who viewed his appointment as a violation of the party’s internal zoning arrangements.

The APC has yet to issue an official statement on his resignation, leaving many to speculate about the implications of this development for the party.
