S’East govs refusal to meet with President Tinubu on Kanu’s freedom unacceptable — Emmanuel Kanu

Family of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has accused southeast governors of deliberate refusal to meet with President Ahmed Bola Tinubu to resolve their son’s continuous detention.
Prince Emmanuel Kanu, who spoke on behalf of the family, said they are left in surprise why the governors refused to meet with Tinubu despite the president asking them to meet him for resolution to Kanu’s case.
The family expressed this dissatisfaction during the memorial service that was held in Umuahia for their late parents, HRM Eze Israel Kanu and Ugoeze Sally Kanu.
According to Emmanuel, it is unacceptable that governors of the region have refused to take decisive actions in order to secure Kanu’s release.
They accused the governors of ignoring their responsibilities.
According to him, President Tinubu had offered them the chance to meet with him in an official capacity regarding Kanu’s case; however, they refused to take advantage of this opportunity.
Prince Emmanuel questioned their reasons for being reluctant, implying that their reluctance may be an indication that they have personal interests in the ongoing unrest in the region.
He stated “The information that we have access to is that Mr. President asked them to meet with him officially over the matter, but up to this point, they have not done so.”
He further emphasised that a significant portion of the instability in the south east is connected to the detention of his brother.
The release of Kanu, according to him, would not only reduce tensions but would also bring to light those individuals who have been exploiting the situation for their own benefit.
In addition, the family voiced their displeasure with the decision made by Justice Binta Nyako to postpone Kanu’s trial indefinitely.
They contended that the fact that she continued to be involved in the case raises concerns about bias because she had previously distanced herself from the litigation.
They are of the opinion that delaying the trial will only do nothing but make the situation more uncertain regarding Kanu’s fate.
During the memorial service, a number of community leaders and individuals in attendance expressed their dissatisfaction with the prolonged detention.
They urged the federal government to take prompt action, stating that the detention of Kanu serves no purpose that is meaningful and only contributes to the further instability that exists in the region.
