Suspected bandits seize House of Assembly Deputy Speaker

Gunmen suspected to be bandits have abducted the Deputy Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly, Samaila Bagudu, in his hometown, Bagudu Local Government Area.

According to reports, the gunmen stormed Bagudu town on Friday, shooting indiscriminately. The deputy speaker was abducted shortly after finishing his prayers and leaving the mosque for his home.

Confirming the incident, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ahmed Idris, said he had just received the information when contacted by our correspondent.

He added that he would provide full details once he received a briefing from the state’s Director of Security.

“Yes, I just got the information about the alleged abduction of the Deputy Speaker in his hometown this evening. I am in touch with the Director of Security in the state

Once I get the details of what transpired, I will alert you very soon on the government’s position,” Idris said.

“I can assure you that the state government is on top of the situation and will ensure he is released safely.”

However, the Kebbi State Police Command is yet to react to the development as of press time.

The incident adds to the series of kidnappings and killings in Nigeria’s northwest. On Tuesday, October 28, bandits reportedly killed a pastor and abducted more than 20 worshippers in Kaduna State.

Rev. Yahaya Kambasiya of the United Church of Christ in Nigeria (HEKAN) was shot dead during the attack, which took place in the early hours when armed men stormed the Farin Dutse community, firing shots and causing panic.

According to HEKAN President, Amos Kiri, the pastor and others tried to hide on a nearby farm but were caught off guard.

“Rev. Kambasiya thought the gunmen had left and came out of hiding,” Kiri said. “He was shot in the back and died instantly.”

Over 20 church members and villagers were abducted in the raid.
