Uchenna inspires basketball next generation
Nigeria’s basketball scene received a boost over the weekend as rising star Gift Uchenna sponsored a two-day development camp, Hoops With Gift, in Abuja in collaboration with Gilal Academy. The initiative aims to nurture young talent and address long-standing challenges in grassroots basketball.
National Basketball Coach Scott Nnaji, who led sessions at the camp, described it as a platform for skill development and personal growth.
“Participants learn not only from their own coaches but from others in the camp, which broadens their experience,” he said. “They will learn life skills alongside basketball fundamentals — the why, what and how of the game.” Nnaji also noted that sustained youth programmes are crucial for improving national performance.
Lawal Daddy, Gilal Academy head coach and Uchenna’s former mentor, praised her work ethic and determination. “She was always ready to put in the work. That’s why I call her the golden girl,” he said. Daddy added that over 100 athletes attended the camp by invitation, with the goal of discovering future stars who could one day surpass Uchenna.
Christ Acha, national 3×3 coach, highlighted the stagnation of Nigerian basketball. “In eight years, the sport has not grown. Our local players struggle because there are no active leagues, and management issues have held back talent,” he said, expressing hope that upcoming Basketball Federation elections could help change the narrative.
Gilal Academy proprietor and Kaduna State Basketball Chairman, Skambo Morrison, said the camp reflects the importance of early development. “We encourage successful players to return home and support sports in Nigeria, not just basketball,” he said.
Participants said the camp was inspiring. Forward Victor Chinoso said it motivated him to work harder and give back, while female player Alisha Godson said: “Gift has taught me that consistency and hard work take you where you want to be. I hope to play professionally and make Nigeria proud.”
The boot camp demonstrates how Nigerian stars are increasingly investing in grassroots initiatives to rebuild the sport and inspire the next generation.
