Victor Ojei shakes off PDP defection to APC in Delta: “I can’t be part of this unholy marriage”

A dissent voice has emerged in Delta state over the defection of state Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, the immediate past Governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa and other party stalwarts from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Victor Ojei, former Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Delta State Governor Oborevwori on Civil Society and NGOs, has distanced himself from the pack, saying he is not part of the “unholy marriage.”

In an interview with Arise News, Ojei expressed deep disappointment over the collective defection, stating, “We went to bed in Delta State as members of the PDP and woke up as members of the APC. The mandate the PDP gave me to serve the people of Delta State was rooted in loyalty to them. However, the people of Delta State were not consulted before this unholy marriage from the PDP to the APC.”

Ojei who played a key role in grassroots mobilization during the last election, emphasised that his commitment was to the people, not to political maneuvoering.

“I came to serve the people of Delta State, not to engage in political migration or seek personal gains. That is why I said I can’t be part of this unholy marriage,” he declared.

He further criticised the leadership’s failure to address pressing issues such as insecurity, saying, “We have a lot of crises in Delta State. Insecurity was on the increase, yet all our efforts to bring the attention of the leadership of PDP were met with silence.”

The defection, described by state officials as a strategic alignment with the federal government to accelerate development, has been met with mixed reactions.

For Ojei and others who share his sentiment, the decision marks a turning point moment when loyalty to the people must come before party interests.
