Man arraigned over assault on BEDC staff in Edo

One Oghomwentiti Uwagboe Best has been arraigned before an Oredo Chief Magistrate Court in Benin City over alleged assault on official of BEDC Electricity Plc on official duty.

He was arraigned on two-count charge bothering on assault and causing grievous harm.

The police prosecutor told the court that the BEDC official visited the suspect’s residence to perform her legitimate duty and that In the course of the operation, the suspect allegedly became violent, and unlawfully assaulted and damaged the phone of the BEDC staff.

The BEDC staff allegedly fell while fleeing and sustained injuries. She was immediately rushed to the hospital for medical attention.

Meanwhile, the suspect pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to him while his counsel pleaded with the court to grant to grant him bail.

The case is expected to come up for further hearing on the 31st of March, 2026.

Speaking on the incident, the Regional Head, Benin South Region of BEDC, Mr Henry Onovwaka said BEDC may pursue civil action for damages cost which will serve as a deterrent to members of the public assaulting our staff
